Rear Projection Television Demystified

Like many people, you may be filled with a burning curiosity to know what makes a rear-projection TV do its magic. Well, it’s largely done with smoke and mirrors. (Just kidding – if you have smoke inside your RPTV you have a serious problem!)

First, a video picture is projected via a projectors lamp inside the box, then a system of lenses and mirrors direct the picture onto the inner surface of a see-through screen.

When this technology was first developed, CRTs (cathode ray tubes – responsible for making traditional televisions so bulky) were used, and it was very successful. The down side to this was that the tube made the chassis very heavy and, usually, a floor-standing cabinet was required to house it.

Eventually,In the end, as screens grew in size, and the industry began to take up the new, wider 16:9 aspect ratio (the ratio of height to width), those old CRT cabinets gradually became replaced by new models which provide high-quality pictures in compact, light enclosures.

Rear projection TVs come ready with high-definition capability nowadays. This is an important point – they are equipped to handle everything high-definition broadcasting and discs can demand of them. And make no mistake – HDTV will produce wide-screen images in much greater detail and clarity than we are accustomed to from traditional TV. In addition to tuners for analog and cable TV – not to mention the ability to receive unencrypted digital cable signals without requiring a set top box – high definition tuners are included in all modern RPTVs, which means they can take full advantage of all the exciting television improvements which will be upon us soon.
