Reciprocal Linking is Bad for Your Business Website Health

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

As small business owners, we need to find traffic for our websites from wherever we can get it — assuming, of course, that the source is relevant traffic. Irrelevant traffic actually HURTS your website rank in the search engines so we don’t want that. For that reason, we are not fans of reciprocal linking schemes, link farms, etc.

Case in point. I recently met with a new client in Los Angeles who needed to market their small business website. They had previously enjoyed a Page Rank of 5 for their website. Over the past two years, it has dropped to a Page Rank of 3. This was due to a number of factors, but chief among those was the fact that they had been forced into a reciprocal linking arrangement with an unscrupulous vendor. It benefited the vendor tremendously, as they were able to show the search engines that their site was being ranked to from a PR5 website; it made the vendor’s site more “buoyant” (it made it rank higher) in the search engines. The moral of the story is, be very careful if someone offers to do you the “favor” of creating a link to your site, in exchange to linking from yours. It could be detrimental to your website’s Search Engine health.

Nevertheless, you should look for opportunities to receive links from relevant websites whenever possible. It might not seem fair to “take” a link without giving one back, but there are other ways you can help the linking website. If they have a satellite website, you could consider linking to that in the body of one of your posts — relevant topic / contextual link / deep link to the satellite site. Just be careful that the link partner understands that directly linking from the satellite site to their main site will not be nearly as good as if they link in a broad circle of 10 sites before returning to the main site. This is somewhat sophisticated SEO / linking strategy that we’re sharing, so it’s not for everyone to implement on their own. It also implies that you have up to 10 web properties that are all somewhat related that can be daisy chained together… Again, not for everyone. But definitely for businesses that want to insure being on Page 1 on Google. ;)

It requires a lot of time, attention and planning to implement a 10-site daisy chain strategy, and we encourage you to go into that with plenty of forethought. Take the time to not only analyze and eliminate any chance of reciprocal linking or neighbor linking possibilities in the chain, and also insure that whomever in your organization will be managing your website network understands this strategy. A small business SEO Policy is a very smart investment in resources. It takes relatively little time for a website to fall in page rank, and a significantly greater amount of time to gain rank — especially after it is lost.

The underlying issue of Page Rank has been said to be overrated, and it’s largely a symbol of the site’s overall bouyancy in the search engines… it’s not necessarily a goal for a web owner to achieve a particular page rank; it’s more of a barometer or guideline than a definitive benchmark or landing point. The website owner with a page rank of 0 would certainly agree that a page rank of 5 would represent that his/her traffic has achieved more traffic (visitors), more conversions and more leads & sales. That’s really the benchmark we’re aiming for.

Social Bookmarking & SEO

Friday, November 6th, 2009

The notion of social bookmarking became hugely sought after thanks to sites such as Deli.cio.us and Digg. The concept is that an written piece or blog is collected, stored and then tagged to be categorized when possible by relevancy. The information recorded by social bookmarks is frequently seen as more useful for many users because the material is arranged for by [humans|actual people}. Its suitability is decided by real viewers rather than a search engine putting up search rankings based on keywords. A points plan is also utilized with articles on social bookmarking sites, to add a better human feel to it.

Social bookmarking can draw tremendous traffic to your site. Marketing your site through social bookmarking is elementary, as long as you have pertinent and valuable content. The bookmarking community will value its usefulness and rate it and thus create better hits through the bookmarking websites. Your site’s audience can expand dramatically thanks to social bookmarkers.
Aim for the niche market that is relevant pertinent to your site. Attempt to connect promote yourself to those interests that will have viewers who appreciate the content, and so can bump it higher and work up excitement about it in the bookmarking circles. You can also build back links to your site by attaching URLs to your content. This may not mean anything in terms of SEO advantage as some social bookmarking sites carry out a ‘no follow’ policy, affixing tags to your links. Nevertheless [users|visitors} could still view your site and increase popularity to the attached links.

Nowadays with hundreds of social bookmarking websites, it is crucial to try to get inducted into one somehow. The opportunities from there are infinite as you raise your viewer constituency and gain points among the people of your site.

Need a website boost. Try One Way Links.

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

One way links explained as sign posts to your website with random anchor text is what we are all about. There is no use wasting your time trying to do this by hand. You really need to join a cooperative program like ours to be effective. Quality One Way links are the basis for solid link building programs. You can do a lot of things to promote your website but the truth is you really need lots of inbound one way links.

One way links are the most powerful web site promotion because they can reach deep into your site. Having a tons of links to your home page is good, but having 50% to you home page and a 2% to 5% to each of the other pages is far better. If your website is effectively constructed for human reading the main page is perhaps the most important but the other pages must be related and provide more details on the site focus.

Success in promoting a website is a long term job. You have to build slowly at first, pick up speed and keep some momentum when it comes to building links. Stopping is not an option.

When it comes to doing a SEO strategy the best are home grown ones. This is mainly because the owner or the site cares more and allocates the proper amount of time to make sure that it is success. SEO companies have to keep lots of clients happy to ensure cash flow. Being your own boss usually yields the best results. You care the most so should you should do the most.

One Way Links is our plan and it works very well. We recommend it because it works. After some consideration we have found it to be the most effective use of efforts.

My New Website

Introduction

When I decided I needed a website for my business I had no idea of the very many processes involved. Like most people, I thought web design meant deciding on the graphics and the look of the pages and then by some magic it would all happen.I simply hadn’t had any exposure to the planning and build process which I now know to be extensive!

I have a friend who is in the business of SEO web design and website development so I approached him for a quote. As a complete novice who is computer literate up to a point, I was amazed at the depth of initial questioning required to find out exactly what I wanted to achieve.I realise now it is akin to building a house or other huge project where it is all in the preparation.

I had no idea about the various elements and the structure of the site and I found it mind blowing when I learnt about the amount of work involved. So I thought other people would be interested to know more about this complicated process particularly if you consider yourself a non computer person and have to get a website built. I have asked my SEO friend to supply the technical information for this article.

Stages in the Process

Target Audience

Before building a website there are important questions to consider. I was asked who would be my target audience. Who are my customers likely to be? Would they be children, businesses, home owners, sales people, parents or teenagers and so on? If you are not clear on your target audience then you are not going to be able to set the tone of the site correctly so this is a very important consideration.

The Objective of the Website

Then I was asked, what was the objective of my website? Did I want to sell services on line or use it to market my business and get more leads for potential customers? Maybe I would want to use the site as an online brochure to showcase my services. Another possibility was to use the website to foster a community so that I was in contact with other like-minded people, with chat rooms, online discussions and being supported by advertising on the site.

I hadn’t quite realised the scope of a website but as I was asked these questions it became clear that a lot of careful thought went into the preparation before building a website.

Creating a Site Map

The importance of creating a site map is to get it clear in your mind of all the pages you will have on your website so you can prepare the content for each page and begin to design the flow through the website, such as when a user adds a product to their basket, then enters their delivery and billing address and makes the credit card payment in the correct order.

One of the areas a lot of customers have difficulties getting their head around is the creation of a sitemap. A sitemap basically sets out all of the pages the site will have, which is very useful for the design stage, and also the copy writing and search engine optimisation aspects of the project.

The aim is to make the site as simple to use as possible so that there are no barriers to getting into the website or making a purchase. For that reason often user name and passwords are set for the customer so that they are not put off making a purchase by having to register.

For a non e-commerce site things are simpler with a contact form which allows you to receive enquiries by email without publishing your email address on the website, thus avoiding spam.Web forms can also validate the information before you receive it, so ensuring that the phone number provided does not contain words, and that the email address is in the correct format, for example. These things may sound very technical to us lay-folk but I assure you everything has to be decided on before starting on the construction of the site. This avoids delays later, and it is best if your developers can complete the work in a single sitting, rather than having to keep putting it down and revisiting it.

Your Domain Name

Choosing a domain name is often quite a problem because every name you initially come up with will almost certainly have been taken. Domain names ending in .com are by far the most popular and internationally recognised; the snag is that it’s very popularity means that the majority of the shorter names have probably already been registered. However, you can usually think of some domain name that is available, which is much less time consuming than trying to purchase a previously registered domain name from its existing owner, most of the time just contacting them, and getting a reply is a challenge.

So looking at names with endings such as .net; .org .co.uk or .info may be able to provide you with the domain name you would like to have. When choosing your domain name it is very important to include one or more of your keywords if possible as this can apparently help with search engine rankings. So although the name of your business is the obvious choice for a domain name, it is not necessarily the only option. You will no doubt have heard the Hoover/vacuum cleaner story, where Hoover is actually a brand name of a certain type of vacuum cleaner, but these days most people still say they are doing the ‘hoovering’ ! This is an important concept to bear in mind when choosing your domain name as hoovers4u.com might be a much better domain name than discountvaccuumcleaners.com, also vacuum is a tricky word to spell so think about things like that too. Also how easy is it to give out your domain name over the telephone for example? Classic examples of this are paydotcom.com and Slashdot.org confusing or what?

Copy

The next stage is preparing the content. This is not the design of your website – just the words and visuals you want to have one each of the pages. A good idea before writing the copy is to have created your site map and decided on your SEO keywords, see below sections.

Having gathered all the previous information you will need to decide what imagery you want to use within the website content. As we all know, a picture speaks a thousand words and remains in people’s memory far longer than just words.

For each image you should also have a caption, as the caption of an image is the next ‘most read’ words on the page after the page title. Images and their captions need to be clickable. When you click on a picture it should take you to the next stage of the process such as the sale page or placing an enquiry if your website is for lead generation. All images should also have alternative text or alt tags. Alt tags will display the hover text when you position your mouse over the picture, but also they are used by screen readers to assist visually impaired users know what the image is about. See the section below on Accessibility and Compliance.

Website Design

Finally we come to the design of your website.

My friend at the web design company says design is one of the most difficult stages of the website process because everybody has their own tastes.

There are a number of ways to approach website design but ultimately you need to create a design brief for the designer(s) to work from. Look at other websites and your competitor’s websites to find out what you like or dislike. The design brief should give reference to the logo, any existing brand guidelines or schemes and fonts and colour schemes, and should also detail which pages of the website that the designer is being tasked with creating visuals for.

The very best results will be achieved by using a graphic designer, and beware – not all graphic designers are the same. A graphic designer who designs specifically for print is working in a different discipline than a graphic designer who designs for screen and specifically the web. So choose your designer carefully, look at other work that person has done and determine whether or not you like their style. It is also worth remembering that design is a personal thing, just because you have used a company before and liked their work, do you know the same person will be doing the work if you use that company again?

If you are working in the big time and budget allows, use multiple graphic designers who have all been given the same design brief and request three concept designs from each designer. If the client themselves also do a graphic design, even if it’s a back of the envelope scribble, you will then have 10 concept designs. The next step is to get them all together and select the preferred elements from each design. Then give the work to the selected graphic designer to work up as the final artwork.

The artwork should be finalised and agreed on by everybody before development of the site begins.

Navigation

Another important consideration when building a website is how you want your navigation to work. You can have links within the content of your website, in the text, so there are not just links from the menu. You will need to decide whether the links will open into a new window, retaining your original page open or just change the page to the one clicked on. Next time you go online, you will realise how much thought has gone into the way in which a website works.

Production

Finally the preparation has been done and the site is ready to be built. Now for the more technical stuff! You will need to have decided which programming language to use to build the website. There are two main types for developing a website, one is Unix based, and the other is Windows based. Each one has pros and cons. If you are starting from scratch then it probably won’t matter, so you can go with the preference of your professional doing the work. My website is built on the Unix platform (apparently!) which is the same as many of the more well known websites such as Ebay, Facebook, Google and Amazon. Also your website hosting must be compatible with the development language with which your website is built.

Work In Progress

The best way to build a website and be able to monitor work in progress is on the web server where the site is ultimately going to live. This way, those involved in reviewing the work can see work in progress and provide feedback throughout the development.

Publishing Your New Website

The moment of excitement comes when your site finally is published to the internet and you see the results of all the thought that has gone into the whole process.

I was over the moon to see my demolition website go live.

As soon as the site has gone live there is no substitute for real world testing though, so ask as many of your friends and colleagues to view the website from their own offices and give you their thoughts.

Accessibility and Compliance

The website has to meet the current standards for website coding and doing so insures that disabled users, such as the visually impaired, can still access the entire website if they are using a screen reader. It is also a good idea to also discuss conformance moving forward, particularly if you have a web content management system, because and accessible of compliant site may become un-accessible after six months of being edited by you if you do not add or edit the website content in an accessible manner.

Unforeseen Items

There are always things that arise in any project which you suddenly realise you have forgotten, so no matter how well the web developer prepares and asks the right questions, there is bound to be a last minute change of mind or addition to the site. The main aim is to minimise the number of glitches that might arise because they aren’t calculated in at the start and they could cause extra costs and delays on the date of the web site going live.As a general rule it is always a good idea to get he site live to the original plans and then look at an update after it has gone live, unless it is a very small deviation from the initial plans.

Reporting and Monitoring

Once your website is up and running, you will want to know how many people visit your website and from that number how many actually buy the products or place an enquiry. From these statistics you can work out the ratio of visits to sales and gradually make changes to improve the ratios. There are some reliable statistics packages such as Google Analytics or Web-Stat.com which allow you to collect and review website visitor data in near real time. All you need to do this is to have a small block of code inserted into each web page on your site.

Another useful service that Web-stat.com provides is to monitor the website and warn you by email or text message if the site is offline.

Marketing

Once the website is live there are lots of things you can do to market your product or service. The first step is to submit it to the search engines and at the same time write articles, and press releases. Getting links to the site from forums, blogs and other social networking spaces are other options. For more on this subject ask your agency about SEO, remember that’s search engine optimisation.

How to be Found on the Web

One of the first questions I was asked was, ‘Do you want it to be found by Google the main search engine?’ If I did then there was a whole process of establishing Keywords. So finding the best keywords are vital if you want to be found in Google. He says there are two main types of keywords. The first is the trophy, or generic, keyword for the industry which in my industry is simply ‘demolition’. The second kind of keyword is the long tail keyword. These are not searched for as frequently but if you can get a match then they are much more likely to convert into customers. A good example of this in my industry is ‘factory demolition company Derby’. So it is very important to do a lot of research on keywords to find both those that are the most popular and the most specific. Generally most users only look at the top ten results so you will want to get your website promoted so as to get on this page for your chosen keywords.

Conclusion

Wheww. What an amazing amount of work! I hadn’t realised when I started the process of getting a website up and running, how complicated it all is and how many factors you have to consider before even designing the website. The word web design is really a misnomer, as people often think it’s just about the graphic design on the home page, and the branding of the product. Unless you are a computer whizz, most people have no idea how much goes into designing and building a website and the systems that support the work you want it to do. I hope that this article gives you an understanding and insight into the whole process of website development from start to finish.Next time you type in a web address or click on a link to a website, remember all the above work that has probably gone into it!

Professional Website Design

What are my goals for the web site?

It’s important to know why you’re building the web site. Is it for sales or marketing? Is it a tool for communication or an online brochure? Do you want to sell products through the web site, or just educate consumers about them? Do you want to increase membership in your organization, or offer Web-based benefits to current members? Do you want visitors to email you? Call you? Subscribe to a newsletter? Knowing your goals will help focus your ideas for the site.

What am I trying to sell or promote?

Even if you don’t like the idea of selling yourself, it’s what we all do, every day, if we want to be successful. Don’t be afraid of sales and marketing. Finding the answer to this question will determine what are the most important themes of the web site, what to name the buttons, and the tone to use when writing the content.

What is our website’s business model and how are we unique?

Even if you have an AWESOME idea – you should develop ideas for an advertising or subscription revenue model or some fundamentals of it.

Who is our target demographic and what will they search for?

To help a web design agency understand your needs, can you describe your target audience in terms of socio-economic profiles;gender;geographical location; Planning for the search in your user’s mind can save you from retrofitting for it later. How would YOU search? How would your mother search? How would your grandmother search?

What will the information architecture be like? What are the important top level keywords?

There needs to be balance between information architecture for usability and keyword information architecture for findability (SEO).

What are the components to getting a website up and running?

Web Design & Development: The architecture of the site needs to be built. An appropriate look and feel must be designed. The copy needs to be written and any additional tools such as online forms, shopping carts and audio clips need to be added.

  1. Web Design & Development: The architecture of the site needs to be built. An appropriate look and feel must be designed. The copy needs to be written and any additional tools such as online forms, shopping carts and audio clips need to be added.
  2. Hosting: Just as you might rent office space, your web site needs to be hosted somewhere so people can reach it.
  3. Upkeep: Once live, a good site continues to post fresh material, giving people a reason to return.

What content do I need to build the site?

First, create an outline around the themes you want to promote. Second, remember that each line of the outline is a page that needs content–text and images that will help educate your visitors. The images may include a logo or photos of people or products. Poor quality photos or bad clip art can make the most attractive site look amateurish; sometimes no photos can be better than poor ones.

An Introduction To Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

You can’t just practise SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) without some experience or information to go on. The better information you have to go on will mean the better you are at optimizing your websites content for good search engine results & rankings. I have some tips and tricks you can use to get started on your SEO adventure and for the best results I’d suggest finishing off your website before submitting it to search engines, so no half finished websites or content should be acceptable.

1. One of the best tips many SEO professionals will give you is to not stuff your content with keywords you’re trying to target, but alternatively place the recommended amount of keywords which is around the 4% – 7% of your websites content – so the more content you have will mean more keywords according to the percentage.

2. Take advantage of the heading tag. Insert a reasonable amount of keywords you’re trying to target with the important phrases and descriptions.

3. Choose your keywords wisely. There is no chance in this world you’re going to get to the top of page one on Google if you’re trying to target highly competitive keywords such as “Coding” – but instead use more realistic keywords and phrases such as “Coding tutorials” or “Easy coding tutorials” and then in the long term who knows you may well be a big competitor to others for the keyword “Coding” as an example.

4. Many Search Engine Optimisation experts will tell you that content is king. If you do not have sufficient content (being content that is well written and uses your keywords wisely) then you’ll not get very far when looking to get increased rankings.

5. Back links are essential and should be worked on constantly if you’re to rank highly for competitive search terms. The most highly ranked websites often have thousands of back links which ranks them well in big search engines. A good place to get started when building links is to submit to website directories and blogs.

Controlling your ranking flow for more profits.

Friday, July 17th, 2009

In my last post I had a section regarding on page SEO and in particular some information on controlling how ranking is passed from a website. If you control your ranking flow you can save time and money by not wasting ranking on such pages as affiliate program, about page, terms and conditions and so on.

The ranking or authority of a website is determined on such aspects as popularity of the website (amount of traffic), number of income links and their quality, number of pages and on page SEO factors. Before I carry on, when I talk about ranking I am not referring to google page ranking, I am referring to the general ranking of a website for all search engines.

As all search engines have their own algorithm’s for ranking websites and unfortunately they don’t share that with the general public, it is impossible to determine exactly how website ranking is worked out. The only thing that is known for certain is onpage SEO, incoming links and amount of pages of a website, play a big part in a websites ranking.

The ranking of a website is probably the most valuable asset to a site owner, it can mean the difference between making a fortune on the Internet or just making some pocket change. Why is it so important? Well the ranking determines where a website is displayed in the search engines, a better ranking equals better placement and in turn better placement equals more clicks.

Like I explained in the previous post, imagine a website main webpage is a bucket which is filled with ranking from SEO effects and there are holes at the bottom of the bucket were the ranking flows out. As ranking is such a valuable asset it’s wise to direct the ranking to were you want it to go by blocking off those holes were the rankings not needed. I am talking about such pages as contact us, terms and condition, disclaimer, category pages, terms of use and pages along those lines. As those kind of pages are designed to improve the customer experience they won’t need SEO on them, so why waste the precious ranking on them.

The two methods I am going to use to control the ranking flow on my website are the html statement ‘nofollow’ and robots.txt. Both of these methods are very simple but very powerful in helping search engines figure out how you want them to see your website and were to direct the ranking.

The ‘nofollow’ statement tells the search engine to ignore the link it is associated with and not to pass any ranking through it. It was first created to help tackle spam comments on blogs but was quickly taken up by website owners when it became common knowledge that it was significant in controlling the flow of ranking on a website.

robots.txt is used to control the spiders that visit a website. A large part of a website traffic comes from programs called spiders, these spiders are used by thousands of companies for many different reasons on the Internet. So if a website is just left open for spiders they can eat up the bandwidth, slow a site down, look at and log information which a site owner may not want to publish and at the very worse mess up a site completely. How does robots.txt help with ranking control? Well it can be used to block off areas of a website were site owners don’t want the spiders to go and by doing so stops the flow of ranking to those areas.

The two methods above are not difficult to implement and are a good way to control the flow of ranking on a website, yet so many website owners overlook this when designing their sites. Having the power to shift ranking around a website will enable a site owner to rank the pages of their choosing with a lot less work and hassle.

SEO Explained

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

There are many popular e-books and programs sold successfully on the internet. A lot of them will claim to teach internet marketing to people who know absolutely nothing about it. Some of these packages will offer easy steps to follow to market your website successfully. The truth of the matter is, these steps are not always easy. The best thing you can do to ensure that you are doing the best SEO on your site is to learn as much as you can and then carry out the tips.

First things first, you have a website. This is your landing page for your business on the internet. If you can afford to hire a web designer, they will be able to help you with choosing the best layout and format of your site to ensure that it is viewable on all browsers and computer types. If you cannot afford one, there are many templates available cheaply on the internet. Remember to keep in mind that the best websites have user-friendly interfaces that are not teeming with pictures, logos and writing all over the place. You will want an attractive site that displays all the information you wish to relate clearly and intelligently.

Banner advertisements are a wonderful way to promote your site. A lot of companies that promote SEO packages will book out banner advertisement spaces on the internet. Banner advertisements are those ads you normally see along the top bar of websites. The most successful banner ads are placed on high traffic sites, and will get a lot of visitors to your site. You need to ensure that your banner ad contains an effective picture and straightforward words. It is detrimental to lure someone through an ad that is not clearly portraying what the visitor will find on your website.

Another popular method of search engine optimization is to write articles and post them onto article sites all over the internet. At the bottom of your article will be a resource box, where you will insert a link leading back to your website. Always be careful to write good, interesting and informative articles. You want to grab the attention of the reader so that they form a relationship of trust with you and visit your site.

Email marketing is another SEO tool that is very popularly used, especially by spammers. This is basically a newsletter that is sent out on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis. Your newsletter will contain information about your site, your services and some links. Naturally you will send the newsletter out to people who have signed up for it on your website. Ensure that you are not sending out your newsletter unauthorized, as sometimes people can get offended and may accuse you of spamming them. Always ascertain that there is a link at the bottom of your newsletters which will allow the reader to unsubscribe at their will.

Takeaways do well in 2008 as the recession sinks its teeth in.

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

With a certain Pizza chain claiming huge profits last year it appears that when the United Kingdom’s public get worried about the monetary situation of the country they turn to food.
The large chain that is making these claims also says that its margins will continue to build over the coming year. It appears that the downturn in the market has made people think about how they are spending their cash and many are choosing to stay home and have their food brought home instead of going out and enjoying the uniqueness of a restaurant.

Many restaurants around the United Kingdom have seen a lessening in their margins and while some have chosen to get their heads down and try to get through it as they are many enterprising restaurants have decided that in hardship comes opportunity and have decided to increase the marketing of their restaurant. As I come from the Manchester/Liverpool region the restaurants are working with the internet to make theirs businesses more visible to the public allowing them to rate their restaurants as they go to them and leave useful quotes about each restaurant.

Businesses that provide a takeaway service or takeaway meal are finding an increase in their calls with the United Kingdom Public whipped into their houses like naughty curs by the poor choices of an impotent government, and only braving their phones and computers to get delivered their normal supply from the Indian restaurant, Chinese restaurant, Italian restaurant and any other restaurant you can consider shaking an empty carton at. Pro active restaurants are saying that you often have to speculate to accumulate, and the only way many are going to survive is to invest in decent websites and good online marketing, which includes effective SEO and choice referral websites.

Manchester and Liverpool restaurants that I have spoken to, see this type of marketing as the way to go with more and more of society buying online online.
